Fátima and Batalha or Alcobaça – Full Day 9 hours
Fátima carries a peaceful energy that many travelers notice the moment they arrive. This small town in central Portugal is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Its story begins in 1917 when three young shepherd children reported seeing apparitions of the Virgin Mary. That moment changed the town forever, turning it into a place where millions come seeking comfort, faith, and reflection.
Located in central Portugal, the charming town of Batalha is most famous for its magnificent monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of Gothic and Manueline architecture. The monastery's name, which translates to "Battle," commemorates the pivotal 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, which secured Portugal's independence from Castile. King João I vowed to build the monastery in thanks to the Virgin Mary for his victory, setting the stage for one of the nation's most important and enduring landmarks.
Tour Program:
This West Region tour allows you to know the patrimonial “masterpieces” of Portugal. You have an option to visit Alcobaça or Batalha. We've decided to include in this tour a visit to Fátima, the religious capital of Portugal, and an essential place to visit for many people.
Meet with your private guide at the hotel lobby. We will start the day with a visit to Fátima and its Sanctuary (one hour from Lisbon), the site where Our Lady of Fátima appeared in 1917. Since then, millions of pilgrims have gone there to pay their promises, to pray, or just to feel its mystical strength! The Sanctuary Square is so big that it can only be described by numbers: it can simultaneously receive 300.000 visitors and it's twice the size of St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
From Fátima, we will continue to the Monastery of Batalha (or Alcobaça as an option), the biggest example in Portugal of the late Gothic Portuguese style, where we can find a mix of the Gothic style with the Manuelino Art – the symbol of the Portuguese maritime expansion. If you choose to go to Alcobaça instead, then you will visit the famous 12th-century monastery.
This monastery is not only a beautiful architectural example, but it also has monuments in memory of King D. Pedro I and D. Inês de Castro (characters of a true romantic Portuguese story from the 14th century, very similar to “Romeo and Juliet”) of magnificent stone handwork. After the visits, return to the hotel.
