Jewish Half-Day Tour in Porto

Nestled along the Douro River, Porto is not only famous for its port wine and charming bridges but also for its deep-rooted Jewish heritage. The story of Jewish Porto spans centuries — from prosperity during medieval times to persecution and, more recently, a remarkable revival.

The Jewish community in Porto dates back to the 12th century, when Jewish merchants, doctors, and scholars played an important role in the city’s cultural and economic life. Their influence could be seen in the old Jewish Quarter (Judiaria), a maze of narrow streets near Sé Cathedral, where synagogues, homes, and markets once stood side by side.

However, like much of Portugal, Porto’s Jewish community suffered during the Inquisition in the 15th century. Many families were forced to convert or flee, and traces of Jewish life seemed lost to history. Yet, centuries later, the community found strength again.

The rebirth began in the early 20th century, led by Captain Artur Carlos de Barros Basto, a Portuguese army officer who helped reestablish Jewish life in Porto. His vision gave rise to the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, one of the largest synagogues in the Iberian Peninsula, built in 1938 with donations from Jewish families worldwide.

Today, Jewish Porto is alive with tradition and pride. The community runs the Jewish Museum of Porto, which tells the moving story of Portuguese Jews through centuries of faith, struggle, and endurance. Visitors can also explore the Holocaust Museum of Porto, offering powerful insights into Jewish history and remembrance.

Walking through Porto today, one feels the echoes of the past blending with the vibrant pulse of renewal. Jewish Porto stands as a living testament to resilience — where memory, identity, and hope continue to thrive.

Program:

Porto does not have a lot of Jewish Heritage sites and memories; it is the home of the earliest Jewish quarter known in Portugal, right in the area of the Cathedral (which we will visit) and Monte dos Olivais. Walking those streets also reminds us of the importance of community living.

We will then continue to visit the Synagogue Kadoorie Mekor Haim, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. The history of the synagogue is inextricably linked to the history of its founder, Captain Arthur Barros Basto, a Portuguese army officer who converted to Judaism.

In the early twenties of 19th century, there were at least twenty Ashkenazi Jews in the city; since they did not have a synagogue, they had to go to Lisbon for all religious matters. After realizing the need for a synagogue, Barros Basto started to plan on building a synagogue, but first, on his initiative, he officially registered in the Civil Government of the local Jewish community in 1923 and named it Comunidade Israelita do Porto (Israelite Community of Porto).

The present synagogue would only begin to be built years later, but the community was organized and rented a house on Elias Garcia Street that started to function as a synagogue.
