Private Day Tour to the Douro Valley, including a guided visit to a local wine estate with wine tasting and a regional lunch.

The Douro Valley

The River Douro rises in Spain and flows east to west across northern Portugal, reaching the sea at Portugal’s second city, Porto. Once a fast-flowing river of rapids and narrow ravines, it has been tamed over the past 25 years by the construction of eight dams along its length, giving it a tranquil, lake-like appearance.

The valley is spectacularly beautiful, with hills that fall steeply down to the water’s edge. The further inland you travel, the wilder and more sparsely populated it becomes, with much of the land devoted to terraced vineyards and olive groves.

This is Port wine country — in fact, it was the world’s first demarcated wine region, established in 1756. Evidence of the Port industry can be seen along the valley with famous names like Cockburn’s, Taylor’s, and Sandeman displayed on the hillsides.

Option A: Quinta de Marrocos Wine Estate

In the beautiful Douro region, the old Franciscan monastery that today houses the Quinta de Marrocos estate enjoys a lovely location on the left bank of the Douro River. The 17th-century house, decorated with country-style antiques, is one of the oldest estates in the Douro, maintaining winery activity for over four generations and producing renowned Port and Douro wines.

Option B: Quinta do Crasto

Located on the right bank of the Douro River between Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto covers 130 hectares, with 70 hectares planted with Grade “A” vineyards. The estate has been in the Roquette family for over a century. Its name, derived from the Latin castrum (Roman fort), reflects its ancient origins.

Continue through the aristocratic area and Avenida dos Aliados, known for its banks and chic shops. Then, enjoy a walking tour along Santa Catarina Street to experience the local atmosphere, with time for a coffee or shopping.

Visit the Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa), an architectural masterpiece with granite work and neo-Arab influences. Continue to Clérigos Church and the Lello Bookshop, one of the most beautiful in the world.

No trip to Porto is complete without visiting one of the Port wine cellars on the south bank of the Douro. After the tour, enjoy a tasting session of some of the region’s finest wines.

End your day with a private vintage yacht cruise along the Douro River.

DAY 6: Lisbon

Lisbon: The City of Discoveries

No area better reflects the spirit of Portugal’s maritime expansion than Belém. It was from here that caravels set sail during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I ordered the construction of the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and masterpieces of Manueline architecture.

A visit to Belém wouldn’t be complete without trying the world-famous Pastéis de Belém, custard tarts made from a secret recipe passed down for generations.

Continue to Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, and visit St. George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) for panoramic city views. To reach the castle, enjoy a ride on one of Lisbon’s iconic yellow trams.

Walk back through the old quarters to downtown and then to the shopping district of Chiado.

Overnight in Lisbon.

DAY 7: Lisbon

Breakfast at the hotel.

Private Day Tour to Sintra, Cascais & Cabo da Roca.

The Enchanted Village of Sintra

Located on Portugal’s central-western coast, Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its romantic palaces, lush forests, and mystical charm. Visit the colorful Pena Palace, a fairytale castle built in the 19th century for Prince Dom Pedro, surrounded by exquisite gardens.

Enjoy free time to explore the charming village, shop in local boutiques, and taste traditional pastries such as Travesseiros de Sintra and Queijadas.

On the return journey, visit Cabo da Roca, described by poet Luís de Camões as “the place where the land ends and the sea begins.” It is the westernmost point of mainland Portugal and continental Europe.

Founded by the Romans in 59 B.C. and named Liberalitas Julia, Évora’s Roman temple, city walls, and ancient baths still stand today.
